'bird's-eye view' series : looking at things in a different light
I started this body of work during the lockdown of the pandemic. This studio building was closed, and I started to work out of my home with what was available. I challenged myself to change mediums from paint to assemblage. Continuing with the series, it has shifted, changed as we all have over the last few years. (less toilet paper rolls)
Working with common objects, household, found and borrowed I create assemblage pieces, then photograph from a bird’s-eye view. The light is as much a part of each piece as the composition. Making a conscious choice to create inside or out, direction and the time of day all play a role.
Looking at things differently. I am telling a story with each assemblage, all carrying a common theme of time and connection. Whether a passage of time, how we spent it, how that shifts or changes with events or just over time.
I aimed to create a sense of balance, calm and familiar. Yet, looking deeper there is an unexpected contradiction of imbalance and sense of discomfort: dis-ease and calm, misplaced and centred.
The images are printed on archival metallic paper then mounted between acrylic and aluminum with the frame sitting off the wall, all a part of creating more depth to the image. With a select few images framed traditionally, intentionally using a bright orange to accentuate the image
